Throughout the pandemic, we wrote unforgettable stories about our hometown heroes – health care workers, first responders, educators and countless others – who rose the challenge and came to the aid of strangers without question or doubt. Our sincere hope is that after viewing and reading the stories, community members will in turn support this community-service project by sending donations that will go directly to the nonprofit agencies. We have combined our Needy Cases and Wish Book programs again this year. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised through the kindness and generosity of those who recognized the hardships of their neighbors and gave unselfishly. We may see the homeless in our communities huddling to stay warm, but we don’t see the everyday struggles of people behind the windows of the house down the street or the walls of the apartment building.īut even if inflation goes away, their struggles will continue.įor decades, Central Jersey residents have rallied to support their neighbors in need through the Home News Tribune’s Needy Cases Fund and the Courier News’ Wish Book programs. It’s in your town, in your neighborhood and on your street. This misery is no stranger to Central Jersey. Budgets that were already tight are beyond the breaking point as the prices of everything, from food and fuel to medical bills and rent, have increased, darkening the prospects for a merry holiday season. Just as we thought we were returning to normal after the pandemic, we are being hit by the highest inflation in four decades. This year presents a new problem for those in need. While most of us enjoy spending time with family and friends during the holiday season, there are many among us here in Central Jersey for whom the holidays remain a bleak and frustrating time.Įvery day during the year they face – through no fault of their own – the challenge of overcoming a scarcity of resources to make ends meet, trying to keep a roof over their head, clothes on their back and decent food on the table.Īlso among our neighbors are those who daily courageously confront the obstacles thrown into the path of their happiness by ill health or disabilities.įor all of them, enjoying the holidays is secondary to just managing to keep their heads above water in the never-ending storm of circumstance beyond their control.
